Join Gregg Akkerman for a reading and signing of his first book, "The Last Balladeer: The Johnny Hartman Story." Akkerman's is the first book to trace the complete story of the beloved singer's life. "The Last Balladeer" follows Hartman's story from his big-band origins to a Grammy-nominated solo career, and includes interviews with his family, friends, and fellow musicians including Tony Bennett, Jon Hendricks, and Bill Taylor.
Gregg Akkerman is a songwriter as well as an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at The University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg. He earned his Doctor of Arts in Music Theory and Composition with a secondary emphasis in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado. Akkerman is the editor of The Listener’s Companion book series from Scarecrow Press and his articles have appeared in JAZZed and the Jazz Education Journal.
