The annual Hub City/Emrys Creative Writing Prize in Poetry has been awarded to Terri McCord. The contest, sponsored by the Hub City Writers Project and the Emrys Foundation, is open to adults in Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
Terri McCord of Greenville won the poetry contest for a set of three poems. Of her work, the judge said, “These poems have a sense of humor, but more than that a sense of the unexplained and unexplainable, a world that resists and exceeds our attempts to measure it, either with science or metaphor.” McCord teaches creative writing and visual art as an artist-in-residence through the South Carolina Arts Commission and through community workshops. She has authored two chapbooks: In the Company of Animals (USC/Stepping Stones Press) and The Art and the Wait (Finishing Line Press) and a full-length manuscript, Saving Light.
Second place in poetry went to Elizabeth Drewry of Landrum, Third place winner was Vera Gomez of Greenville.
The three winners of the poetry contest will read at the Hub City Bookshop on Wednesday, May 16 at 6 p.m. This is a free event, and the public is invited.

Among the writers who have visited our community for readings or workshops in the past two years are: Jonathan Tropper, Richard Russo, Wiley Cash, Thomas Kennedy, Tea Obreht, Davy Rothbart, Barry Lopez, Rick Bass, Tayari Jones, Ron Rash, Jill McCorkle, Neil Gaiman, Lee Smith, Robert Olmstead, Albert Goldbarth, and R.T, Smith, among many others. The creative writing faculties at Spartanburg's colleges include many writers who have published books, including poets Rick Mulkey, Deno Trakas and John Lane, fiction writers Elizabeth Cox, Susan Tekulve, Sam Howie, Brock Adams, and Thomas McConnell. The Atlantic magazine's venerable fiction editor C. Michael Curtis teaches at Wofford College and sits on our editorial committee. A low-residency MFA in creative writing is offered at Converse College.
