Hub City Upstate Youth Writing Camps
The Hub City Youth Writing Camp is a fun, five-day immersion in creative and professional writing led by a talented team of published and award-winning writers. Students in the Greenville-Spartanburg area will be able to explore their passions for self-expression in a variety of genres, while developing creativity and confidence.
Our camps take place in downtown Spartanburg. Young writers begin the day at 9 a.m. at the Hub City Bookshop and Coffee Bar, attend classes in the Herald-Journal building, participate in "observation writing" sessions in Morgan Square, and take field trips in the downtown area. The day ends at 3 p.m. At the end of the week there is a public reading at the Hub City Bookshop for family and friends.
During the first two sessions (June and July), students will explore fiction, poetry, memoir, journalism and other exciting forms and will receive feedback on their writing in a supportive environment from experienced writers. The third session, in August, is an advanced fiction camp. Our instructors and visiting writers include local novelists, poets, reporters, and the Hub City Writer in Residence.
These camps are hosted by the Hub City Writers Project and the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, with sponsorship from the J.M. Smith Foundation.
June 16-20 (Ages 13-16), $225
July 14-July 18 (Ages 10-13), $225
Aug 4-Aug 8 (Ages 13-17, Advanced Fiction Camp). $225
Tuition includes two lunches at downtown restaurants. Students will bring their lunches on the other days. Snacks and journals will be provided. Students may bring laptops or favorite journals if they choose.
A limited number of full scholarships are available for students in need and require proof that the students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch at school. To request a scholarship application, email email@example.com or call 864-577-9349.
While there is no deadline, you are strongly encouraged to register by June 1. The camp will close when filled to capacity (10 students). A detailed confirmation letter will be sent once your registration has processed.
If you need to cancel after registration, notify Hub City Writers Project before the start of the second day of class for a standard 80% refund.
