Hub City releases two fiction titles for Spring 2015
This spring, Hub City Press is proud to publish two books of fiction from a pair of authors, both seasoned and brand new. Pasture Art by Alabama native Marlin Barton features stories, all set in the Alabama Black Belt, that explore the history, culture, and human spirit of the people who live there, including "Into Silence" which was included in Best American Short Stories 2010. Minnow by Beaufort native James E. McTeer II is a Lowcountry Heart of Darkness about a young boy on a quest to save his father and was chosen as the winner of the 2014 South Carolina First Novel Prize.
Marlin Barton has previously published two collections of short stories, The Dry Well and Dancing by the River, as well as two novels, A Broken Thing and The Cross Garden. He teaches in and helps direct the Writing Our Stories project, a program for juvenile offenders in Alabama. He also teaches in the low-residency MFA program at Converse College.
Pasture Art contains stories that author Cary Holladay describes as "electrifying. Marlin Barton's Alabama is dangerous as a rattlesnake, dark as a mine, and deep as a well." Author Dan Wakefield says "The stories in Pasture Art rank with masters of the form."
Pasture Art will be released March 17 and is available for pre-order here.
Minnow was chosen by National Book Award finalist Ben Fountain as the winner of the 2014 South Carolina First Novel prize. Author Lauren Groff describes Minnow as "an urgent novel, as stark and wild as the fairy tale deep in its bones."
Born and raised in Beaufort, McTeer is the grandson of the late J. E. McTeer, whose 37 years as High Sheriff of the Lowcountry (and local witch doctor) served as inspiration for the winning novel. McTeer, 30, has worked for five years as a school media specialist and is currently the librarian at Polo Road Elementary School in Columbia. He lives in Lexington with his wife, but travels to Beaufort monthly “to soak in the marsh, the mud, and the salty air.”
Minnow will be released May 1 and is available for pre-order here.
