5 Questions with Summer Intern Leslie Peters
What excites you most about Spartanburg and the summer internship program?
This internship will be a great opportunity to get to know the community of Spartanburg in a new way. I have made previous trips before to visit but always had to leave the same day; this time around I will get to fully explore and enjoy all the best the town has to offer. I was told the Carolina Panthers practice at Wofford so it might be worth the trip if I get to meet Cam Newton.....As an intern I hope to meet new people and have the chance to learn new things both in and out of the position. In fact I would maybe like to pick up a new hobby like archery.
Why publishing? What interests you about it and how did you decide this was what you wanted to pursue?
By happy accident I fell into the world of Publishing. After graduating in 2015 I was looking for jobs and I applied mostly at a firm called Edelman here in Atlanta. While I was submitting an application there was a sidebar that said "You may also be interested in" and listed there was an internship with W W Norton to work in their college marketing department. I had always been interested in books and an opportunity to work in NY seemed appealing at the time. As luck would have it I interviewed later that week and got the position. Soon after starting I found I loved it and wanted to do it professionally.
Any plans post-internship?
Plan A: Win the Lotto. Plan B? Not sure. I have spent the last 19 years of my life in school and I feel like its all I know. I would love to start my career and strike out independently but I also feel a bit exhausted and just need to take a breathe. I will most likely continue to work but not at the break-neck pace I had before. Hopefully the summer will help to shed some light on what it is I would like to do next.
What’s the best book you’ve read this year?
Being in school didn't leave much time for personal reading. However I do anticipate picking back up again with my most favorite of hobbies. I plan to read the novelization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I hear good things and since I liked the movie I think it probable that I will love the book (the book is always better.)
What do you like to do for fun? Where might we see you on a Saturday afternoon?
On a typical Saturday you can find me sight seeing. I love finding new places to enjoy. Food, music, festivals, parties, I enjoy lots of things. Some days though there is nothing better than a bowl of pretzel sticks and some Netflix. I am a huge movie buff and will most likely be spending this summer watching all the superhero movies that come out multiple times.
